Hey Strangers

Not blogging that much these days, and I just updated the data base… for the sake of security and all that jazz. Perhaps I’ll start blogging again, but I’ve been too busy making shiz. Check out http://sonnyassu.com to see my archived portfolio and http://say2k.tv to see some stuff I randomly post to my tumbler. This site, assucreative, was my former blog at say2k.tv that I ported over.

Whoa!

So for year assucreative just sat empty… with promises of being up and running, sooner than later. The original intent was to give the creative Assu’s a place on the net to show the world what we do. Well what we do is get too busy to get a site like we wanted off the ground.

So after much though, I decided to take AC down and just let it stew in a shallow internet grave. However, I’ve been thinking as of late how to restructure my other sties. And then it occurred to me: Why not use AC as my artist blog and use sonnyassu.com as my portfolio site? SPLENDID IDEA! So here we are… assucreaitve has the archives of sonnyassu.com and will now be used as my artist blog, where I’ll eventually ramble on about shit that I’m doing. So re-bookmark and check back!

Compassion for ourselves.

I was having lunch today and briefly skimmed an article in the Georgia Straight about the crisis in the Congo. From what I read, the man who the article was about escaped with his family, eventually getting the documents he needed to set up a new home in Canada. What caught my eye was the title of the article, “African Advocates say Canada owes Congo” Continue reading

Election Day

I’m not too sure if this proposed strategic movement is going to turn out the way everyone is hoping. My fear is that it’s going to split votes among the left groups, leaving the Cons to win by a minority in specific ridings. Thus giving them the seats they want. But I guess my fear is the last minute strategic band-wagoners…. I have no fear that those who have researched the issues will be doing the right thing. I just have little faith in the Canadian voters who are easily swayed by flashy attack ads. After all, this is the same voting public that allowed Bush’s golf buddy to launch into power in the first place. Continue reading

So it seems the binners have become unionized…

…maybe a strike is a-comin?

As a building manager, I’ve witnessed a few odd and a few very odd things. But it isn’t uncommon for me to witness the daily parade of binners that come down the back lane to root for gold.

Binners, for those who might not be familiar with the term, is slang for people who raid the trash and recycling bins for crap that we toss out, which they can make some cash on. Generally, they are pretty harmless, although I’ve had to yell at a few of them over the years for coming in and digging through the trash at ungodly hours.

I heard some loud talking coming from around back this morning, and it alerted my senses. Ben had mentioned to me in passing a while ago about a couple of dudes coming around to the back of the building and working out a minor drug deal. So when I heard voices, I just assumed maybe I’ve finally caught them! So I jumped to my feet. Then I remembered I just woke up and well, pants. You can’t bust up a drug deal in your ginch.

So I peered over the balcony to see what was going on. It was one of the familiar binners who has been visiting this building for years. Lets call him Doug. Doug is a nice dude. Friendly, someone I’d feel comfortable walking up to and shooting the shit with. Not that I normally talk to binners, but he’s been coming here for years and he’d always talk my ear off when I was painting my spirit bear a couple of years ago. I trust Doug. When it comes time to clean the back lot, I’d have no problems asking Doug if he’d want to make a quick $20. Last time I gave him $10 to clean behind the dumpster and he turned it into a little slice of heaven. If heaven for you is behind a dumpster I suppose.

Anyway, I always thought binning to be solitary happening, I just assumed that everyone was out for themselves. And really, I usually only see Doug and the others by themselves. But it seems that this veteran binner was schooling a noob.Really? How hard is it to climb into a dumpster and look for those little gems of recycling gold? Doug is a nice dude, friendly and respectful… so I guess maybe he was just showing the new guy the ropes. Going into details about how to properly jump in a bin, what they are looking for and explaining the turf. Which I would assume to be important. No one wants to get stabbed with a Coke can shiv.

New look and quick update

Just a quicky update. I’ve settled on this template I believe. Over the next month or so, I hope to come in and make it look more me.

I’ll be taking part in an artist in residence at the Bill Reid Gallery of North West Coast art and I was recently interviewed for a Bravo documentary about the evolution of North West Coast art.

I HOPE to get a gallery up here soon. Yeah yeah, I’ve said that before. ;)

Some new work.

And a possible new artist statement… not ready to say its totally part of my artistic premiss, but I’ll work on it a bit. To put this in context, I’m taking part in an exhibit next year at the Bill Reid Gallery called Continuum. The premiss of the show is to create a modern discourse on traditional work. Which is something I’m doing anyway. Yet, I’m not creating traditional work… its more like I’m creating a modern discourse for traditionally inspired iconography. its complicated to explain at the moment and I don’t want this to get too wordy. Which bye the time you’re finished reading this, will have been :P

Has the iPod become the Raven? Or has the Raven become the iPod?

For the continuum project, I recognized I was in a boat that only a few others paddle along with me: we are creating traditional inspired work in a contemporary context. By adopting items of pop-culture as the new iconography. I’ve been developing a series of work call the Personal Totems series. This series explores the notion that the items of pop-culture (what we as consumers covet) have become our new totemic imagery. How will our mythos translate into a modern world? I asked myself a basic question one day: How would the Raven fit into the new world? If we are to believe our mythology, where has the Raven gone? The Raven, in essence, hasn’t gone all that far. The Raven is a cunning creature, who not only craves attention, but likes to covet items that make him happy. We have become the Raven in our contemporary culture: we covet items that make us happy. iPods, the latest cell phones, cars, money, etc.

But we never ask ourselves why. Why do I need all this shit?

Raven, the trickster, has transformed himself into Mass-Media; Poking at our brains with his commercial-break beak, telling us what we crave on a subconscious level. We crave like the Raven, But where he craved the sun for his own selfish needs… we crave a grande half foam extra hot latte. But by mistake, the Raven gave us light. And by mistake, we have created a consumer society that unites us, yet distances us from each other. We crave technology that keeps us connected, yet at the same time isolates us in our own little sound track world.

The iPod, much like Coca-Cola, has become a recognizable symbol of the modern age. To own one speaks of individuality. But to own one says I’m just like you. This tiny combination of metal, plastic, circuits and flashing lights unifies us: You might not have anything in common with the long haired, black-band-shirt-wearing-metal-head, bopping along to the screaming death metal on the bus; but when you notice he to has an iPod, you are both connected though this pop culture totem. Regardless of the fact you may or may not be listening to something completely different than him, you are part of the same clan: the iPod clan.

The iPod is the new cultural icon. But it isn’t just limited to this one particular piece of technology. The iPod is a symbol of the technology and pop-consumer movement, and it could be replaced by any other item of pop/consumer/techno-culture: Cell Phone, PDA, MP3 player, computer, laptop, running shoes, clothing, food and even a person.

My work over the past 6 months has been developing into a modern and abstract approach to form-line and design. I recognize that I am unique and that I want to set myself apart from others who use this imagery and technique. I am creating my own tradition: Appropriating imagery from the dominant culture to speak about the ideas of progression. To fully be considered in a modern discourse, we need to draw a line between assimilation and manifestation. My work is a manifestation of a new direction.

Bill Reid set out to have the stylized form-line become part of the modern art discourse. He was able to elevate our art practise into a new light. There comes a time, when the student becomes the master. I’ve taken the notion of tradition and combined it with modern imagery to form a new discourse. Why?

To inspire others to follow my path, then stray from it.

One of those kids would make the coolest exchange kids ever.

Its amazing to think that in 2008, we have people living on the planet who don’t know about us, and we don’t know about them. Western civilization has done pretty much everything in its power to change the world, some have changed out of good, but most, out of greed. We are causing global warming and the earth is responding in kind to clean herself up. The Earth can survive without humanity, we can not survive without the earth. Where’s my bowl of granola?

All right, now that we know they are there Continue reading
